Editorial

No, our science is no illusion. But an illusion it would be to suppose that what science cannot give us we can get elsewhere.

Sigmund Freud

Dear colleagues,

It is with pleasure that I write the editorial of the second issue of the Serbian Journal of the Medical Chamber in 2024, which will mark four full years of regular publication of our Journal. We are proud to have achieved the goals set out since the founding of the Journal, which, with our great effort and the trust you have placed in us, we continue to build upon. During this period, we have faced many challenges. We have succeeded in being recognized for the quality of the articles published and in having this confirmed by com- petent institutions that quantify the work of scientific journals. We have expanded our cooperation with the Institute for Medical Research and have supported two national congresses with international participation and one symposium whose books of abstracts were printed as supplements to our Journal.

We have laid a solid foundation for future work, and we look forward to the further scientific progress of the Journal. With the thoughts, ideas, and results stemming from your research, we will strive to increase the impact of the Journal at the national level, while at the same time developing all the qualities necessary for its further progress and visibility in international citation databases.

Articles published in this issue will also greatly contribute towards reaching these goals. I would like to thank all the authors who have placed their trust in us and decided to present their research to their col- leagues in our Journal.

The original article by Janko Janković et al. Prevalence and sociodemographic inequalities in developing type 2 diabetes multimorbidities in Serbia, presents the results of a secondary analysis of data from the Ser- bian National Health Survey. The results indicate that type 2 diabetes mellitus is most often associated with stroke, myocardial infarction, and liver cirrhosis, while multimorbidity occurs more often in older people, women, and people with a lower level of education and lower income.

In the original paper Examining the prevalence of thrombophilia in women with fetal loss, Danijela Mandić presented the results of a study confirming that combined thrombophilia carries a significant risk of preg- nancy loss and that the administration of low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) significantly improves pregnancy outcomes in subjects with congenital thrombophilia and previous pregnancy loss.

Postoperative complications and their correlation with the surgical technique in the treatment of gastroschi- sis is an original article by Natalija Kecman and Vesna Milojković that does not speak to the superiority of any of the presented methods of treating gastroschisis. Ileus and compartment syndrome, as complications, are more frequent when the technique of primary fascial closure of the defect is used, while delayed primary repositioning of the defect using a silastic bag is more often complicated by necrotic enterocolitis and death.

The research presented in the original paper The outcome evaluation of acute ischemic stroke in the pos- terior region in relation to routine blood count parameters – neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, plateletcrit and mean platelet volume, by Dejan Munjiza et al., confirms that higher values of the ratio of neutrophils to lympho- cytes and higher plateletcrit values were associated with a worse outcome of stroke in the posterior basin.

In the review article The role of oxidative stress in ovarian cancer pathogenesis, Petar Simić et al. state that it is of great importance to know the pathogenetic mechanisms of oxidative stress as a factor in ovarian carcinogenesis, which, along with non-specific complaints and the detection of malignancy in an advanced stage, represent the basic factors of a poor prognosis of the disease.

Katica Tripković, author of the review article Understanding public health professionals: their roles, signif- icance, and challenges, states that, in order to provide high-quality public health services, reduce health in- equalities, and adequately respond to new public health challenges, a comprehensive overview of the man- agement of public health personnel, together with the development of strategic and operational personnel policies within the healthcare system of the Republic of Serbia, is necessary.

In the article Red blood cell adaptations induced by exercise, Radoš M. Stefanović et al., through a literature review, emphasize the therapeutic benefits of exercise for human health, demonstrating that the findings of the adaptive characteristics of erythrocytes can serve as a useful resource for interpreting clinical results in highly physically active individuals.

Elizabeta Marčeta and Jovana Todorović, in their article Workplace violence against healthcare workers – call to action, draw attention to the fact that workers in the healthcare system are not spared from violence in the workplace and that it is necessary to define violence in the workplace and determine its prevalence, types, consequences, as well as possible interventions aimed at reducing its frequency.

In the article Lessons learnt from inappropriate D-dimer testing – case report, author Nikola Pantić et al. indicate the diagnostic importance of D-dimer, if the analysis is carried out according to the indications. Use in non-standard and unjustified indications requires additional caution and consideration of all other parameters before the administration of therapy.

Stefan Jerotić et al. presented the successful application of intranasal esketamine as an augmentation agent in the treatment of treatment-resistant depression in the article Use of intranasal esketamine in the treatment of treatment-resistant depression: a case report. They also emphasize the importance of a better understanding of the mechanism of action, dosing method, long-term outcomes, and the safety profile of this approach.

A group of authors led by Zorica Radonjić, in their case report Clinical and serological features in an elev- en-month-old infant with paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, pointed out the importance of the clinical recog- nition of paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, the transient nature of ‘biphasic hemolysin’, and the possibility of performing the DL test for timely confirmation of the diagnosis of a rare form of autoimmune hemolytic anemia.

In her article, Primary lymph node plasmacytoma - a rare clinical entity, case report, Snežana Sretenović demonstrated that every lymphadenopathy requires a serious and detailed approach by the clinician, even when clinical manifestation and extramedullary localization do not indicate plasmacytoma.

Sincerely
